Groom dips bride in the garden at the Thornewood Castle

A Real Wedding at The Thornewood Castle

May 06, 20265 min read

There are some weddings that feel like stepping into another time.

Sarah and Frank's wedding day at Thornewood Castle was one of those celebrations.

From the moment I arrived that June morning, it felt as though every part of the day belonged exactly where it was meant to be. The stone walls, ivy-covered gardens, antique architecture, and quiet pathways created an atmosphere that felt timeless. Yet despite the grandeur of the castle, what I remember most isn't the setting.

It's the way Sarah looked at Frank.

Long before the wedding day, Sarah told me something that stayed with me.

She said Frank makes her laugh. He makes her smile. And spending the rest of her life with him simply makes her heart happy.

After photographing their wedding, I understood exactly what she meant.

One glance between them said everything.

A Dress Made With Love

One of my favorite details from the day wasn't something purchased in a bridal boutique.

Sarah found a simple wedding dress online and transformed it into something entirely her own.

For weeks leading up to the wedding, she carefully hand-sewed delicate lace flowers across the gown. Layer by layer, she created something that reflected both her creativity and her heart. The nude underlay allowed each white lace flower to stand out, giving the dress remarkable texture and dimension without feeling overdone.

As she finished getting ready in the bridal suite overlooking the rose garden, the morning light filtered through the windows, illuminating every hand-stitched detail.

Watching her step into a gown she had invested so much time creating made it feel even more meaningful.

Meanwhile, Frank waited downstairs in a classic black tuxedo accented with cream lapels and a single white rose boutonniere. Timeless. Elegant. Effortless.

A Garden Ceremony Surrounded by Beauty

One of my favorite parts of photographing weddings is watching how each couple makes a venue their own.

For Sarah and Frank, that meant exchanging vows in the castle's beautiful garden.

Guests gathered while a single guitarist filled the air with music, creating an intimate atmosphere that fit the setting perfectly. Rather than elaborate entertainment, the ceremony relied on simplicity, allowing every word and every emotion to take center stage.

As Sarah made her way toward the ceremony, her cathedral-length veil floated gently behind her.

Standing at the top of the garden steps, surrounded by blooming flowers and the people who loved them most, they promised forever to one another.

There wasn't a need for anything extravagant.

The setting spoke for itself.

Portraits Throughout the Castle Grounds

After family photographs with the castle serving as the backdrop, we spent cocktail hour exploring the property together.

One of the things I enjoy most as a photographer is discovering how every location offers something unique.

At Thornewood Castle, there is no shortage of beautiful places to create portraits.

We wandered through the gardens, photographed among the historic architecture, and even stopped by the life-sized chessboard for a few playful images that reflected their personalities.

Sarah's bouquet of white, blush, peach, and vibrant fuchsia peonies added the perfect pop of color against the neutral stone walls and lush greenery surrounding the estate.

Some of my favorite photographs from the day came simply from allowing them to walk together, laugh together, and enjoy those first quiet moments as newlyweds.

A Celebration Filled With Meaning

As guests made their way into the reception, Sarah and Frank were introduced for the first time as husband and wife.

The evening unfolded naturally.

Dinner was followed by heartfelt toasts from family and friends before they shared their first dance together.

One detail I especially loved was their wedding cake.

The three-tier design featured soft white and copper accents, decorated with peonies that echoed Sarah's bouquet. Resting atop an antique white cake stand with intricate silver detailing, it felt perfectly suited to the timeless character of the castle.

Throughout the evening, they smiled constantly.

Not because someone asked them to.

Because they genuinely enjoyed being together.

Ending the Day by the Water

Just before the evening light disappeared, we stepped outside one final time.

The private dock behind the castle offers one of the quieter spots on the property, and as the sun began to set, it became the perfect place to end the day.

Only the couple and photographer are permitted on the dock, creating a peaceful moment away from the celebration.

As they stood together overlooking the water, a bald eagle soared overhead.

It was one of those unexpected moments that no amount of planning could create.

Sometimes nature provides the perfect ending all on its own.

From Behind My Camera

Every wedding teaches me something new about the places I photograph.

One thing I appreciate about Thornewood Castle is how many different portrait locations exist within a relatively small area. Between the gardens, historic architecture, grand staircases, elegant interiors, and waterfront views, there is incredible variety without ever feeling rushed from place to place.

There are also a few details couples should know when planning their day.

Because the castle houses historic artwork, photographers cannot use direct flash toward the paintings inside the building. The Hall of Mirrors, located on one of the upper floors, is another stunning space available for portraits. The garden ceremony location requires an additional reservation, and couples planning to get ready on-site may want to allow extra time depending on their schedule.

One feature I especially love is the private dock. Since access is limited to the couple and photographer, it creates an intimate setting for sunset portraits away from guests.

For couples wanting to extend the experience even further, overnight accommodations are available within the castle itself, making it easy to begin or end the celebration surrounded by the property's rich history.

More Than a Beautiful Venue

Looking back through Sarah's and Frank's gallery, I certainly remember the castle.

I remember the gardens.

I remember the architecture.

But more than anything, I remember two people who couldn't stop smiling every time they looked at one another.

Sarah spent weeks sewing flowers onto her dress.

Frank smiled every time she walked into the room.

Their wedding wasn't memorable because it took place inside a castle.

It was memorable because everywhere they went throughout the day, they carried joy with them.

Those are the photographs that last.

Those are the moments worth remembering.
