Kissing Under the Rose Canopy at Point Defiance Park

Flower Garden Engagement

When I planned this flower garden engagement photoshoot at Point Defiance Park, I tried to consider the best time to go. If I picked a later time, the space would typically be crowded. So, I suggest we meet on a Sunday morning instead of later in the afternoon. And, thankfully I was right! This flower garden engagement shoot was perfectly planned. From the pink rose floral canopy, to the little pink roses embroidered on Stacy’s dress, I thought wow, this was perfectly thought through! Even Justin’s pink glitter shoes and pink plaid jacket were clever touches for this photoshoot.

Point Defiance Park is located in Tacoma, WA. It’s a great spot for photographers who want to capture the beauty of the gardens. But, it is also a quick walk to the Point Defiance marina which is part of Puget Sound. You can often see huge ships and catch the ferry nearby. There is a zoo, aquarium, forest paths, Wilson Way Pedestrian Bridge and Owen beach.

The focal point of this flower garden shoot was the roses. Interestingly, there is over an acre of rose gardens alone. The park includes a garden of miniature roses, arbors of climbing roses, a picturesque wishing well and quaint gazebos. While we were there, the number of photographers taking pictures of the flowers surprised me. But, with over 1500 roses planted around the park, we had plenty of space to take our photos. The weather was perfect; not too hot or cold and with minimal wind.

The Couple

Literally, I had an immediate connection with Stacy and Justin. To be honest, I am looking forward to their wedding day. But first, we needed to do the engagement shoot. I try to suggest different places around Puget Sound with a variety of backdrops such as; parks or beaches, forests, mountains or lakes. Conveniently, parks tend to be fun places for a little adventure without a lot of walking around. I believe that the engagement shoot is so important to pull off the genuine expressions I want on the wedding day. For that reason, an engagement shoot is a great time to practice and get familiar with being on the front side of the camera.

Flower Garden Engagement

When Stacy and Justin decided to have their engagement photos at Point Defiance Park and meet at the Dahlia garden, I knew this was going to be amazing. I believe a flower garden engagement shoot is a perfect backdrop. First, the flowers are on full display and it’s easy to get to. But, honestly, I just like to visit the gardens and what a perfect spot for a flower garden engagement. The fact that Stacy and Justin decided to coordinate and their clothes perfectly matched the pink roses was serendipity. I love that Justin is all about his shoes.

The ring set.

The Engagement Ring

I am always impressed with the engagement rings and how the proposal takes place. So, it’s often something I ask a couple about as we do the shoot. I love the unique rings Justin and Stacy picked. I placed the rings at the base of a tree by the pond. The pictures almost have a “Lord of the Rings” vibe.

As we walked around the pond and discussed the rings, Justin revealed he had brought the wedding bands, too. Good man! The best part of this park is there was a weeping willow tree, bridges and a waterfall to use as a backdrop. The park not only had beautiful flowers on display, there are an assorted group of animals, too. I managed to get a picture of the ducks, turtles and even a bumble bee.

The Photos
